Mississippi

Months have passed, and so much has happened, and I am lazy and am not going to go into it all. It sufficeth me to say that the Connor family has left Hawaii and have moved to the South. The South you say? Yes, the deep, deep South, Mississippi to be exact. We are right here on the Gulf Coast. The land of oil spills and hurricanes. We have really stepped in it this time haven't we? It is hot here, and humid, but despite it all, we have found enjoyment in our surroundings and are having a great time. When you are a military family, moving is part of the whole package. We have moved and moved often in our ten years of Navy life. The trick is to determine before hand that you are going to like . . . where ever it is that they send you. You really don't have much of a choice in the matter to be honest. You need to be able to find positive and fun things to do in all places, because there really are great things everywhere.

We are living on base at the Construction Battalion Command in Gulfport, Mississippi. We are in a brand new, four bedroom, one level home. The best thing about it is the free AC, the worst would probably have to be the flooring. Most of the house is covered by light colored tile, which is murder on your feet and does not stay clean. The bedrooms are carpet, it is the church style Berber carpet with absolutely no padding of which to speak. Besides that I will only say that despite a few manufacturing flaws, it is pleasant and we have enjoyed living here so far. We live right across from the park and have a lot of great neighbors. Hopefully this trend will continue because there are still a lot of empty homes (it is a new subdivision) and we don't yet have anybody in the other half of our duplex.

The tilt really isn't that noticeable once you're used to it :)

Our stuff has arrived, finally, it was a long trip from Hawaii, but we are happily unpacking and finding places for all of our stuff. There are so many kids on our street. Our children are thrilled because there are so many friends here. The kids have also started school. Nathan is in the fourth grade and Joslyn is in the first. Caleb is going to be attending a joy school that I found through a lady in the ward. There are eight kids in the group and each of the moms will take turns teaching the kids twice a week. I wish that I had never mentioned it to him, because now he asks me every day if he is going to school. Cute and annoying at the same time.

Our ward is nice. We meet in the stake center and we are the only ward there, so that means no time changes. We don't have callings yet, but that is coming. The Bishop met both Phil and I for "get to know you" interviews and he had a gleam in his eye when we left, so we'll see what happens. It is fun to get to know new people and we are figuring out what there is to do in the area. We have already found the library and Nathan has started scouts. More news to come . . .

Your comment about the tilting house made me laugh. It looks like a nice place, minus the light colored tile and church carpet ;) and it is wonderful that there are so many children around. I love your attitude about moving around so much, there is something special and fun about every place. If you have the chance to eat crawfish etouffee or other regional food...take it! I'm still kinda sad I didn't try the alligator in Arkansas. :)

Glad to see your family is settling in and that you have such a beautiful home to live in! A big part of our house is tile as well, so I already bought one big, soft rug and am thinking of getting more :) But I do feel like I'm always sweeping! We miss you guys, so I'm happy you are doing so well there!
